Equipment Tracking: Where Is My Truck?

Posted 01/23/15

Tracking your fleet and managing the productivity of trucks is critical to your bottom line. Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking information can assist with load planning, shipping visibility, and driver management. Just as important, Equipment tracking information can help your drivers adhere to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations. Most importantly, it will help businesses answer  critical questions like where is my truck, what has it been doing, and how long until it arrives.

Equipment Location

A geo-fenced GPS system is essentially a virtual barrier. Instead of using longitude and latitude coordinates, geo-fencing uses geographical boundaries. It provides the distance from the next closest city. Using this type of GPS system can be beneficial to fleet management because it provides a better representation of speed and stop time. A geo-fenced GPS system can track the duration of a stop by a truck. If a truck were to go off route, a dispatcher could easily see it and get in touch with that driver.  A bread crumb trail displays several GPS map location points to determine the trucks specific route, stop times, start and end points, and speed throughout the trip

Proximity Search

Proximity search is a great way to utilize equipment tracking. Here’s how it works. Simply input the address, city, state, or zip code, and number of miles you would like to search for your equipment. Automatically, trucks within that radius will pop up on the screen. This can be a critical asset to have within a GPS system. If a customer calls and has a pickup, fleet managers can simply input the address and the closest trucks to that location will be displayed. The dispatcher can then send a message to the preferred driver to pick up the freight. Proximity search is also useful when it comes to break downs and accidents. It helps find the closest truck that can provide assistance.

Messages

There are many features that work together with GPS. One of those features is a messaging system. An effective GPS system provides easy to use free form and pre-written 1 touch messages. Voice mail in the cab or in the office takes care of those times you need to leave the truck, or the office, and eliminates wasted time on hold.  Communication and GPS go hand in hand, and a messaging system will help dispatchers and fleet managers greatly improve productivity.
